Dr Darren Mitchell - War Memorial Historian

Dr Darren Mitchell completed doctoral studies (Department of History, University of Sydney) in 2020. His thesis, titled Anzac Rituals: Secular, Sacred, Christian, researched the origins of Anzac commemoration in the 1910s and 1920s, including the Dawn Service tradition, the significance of flora/wreaths, and ceremonial silence.

Darren worked for the New South Wales Government in various roles for over thirty years. From 2009 to 2014, he was the Director of the NSW Anzac Memorial, the State’s principal war memorial, and planned the State’s Great War Centenary Commemoration Program.

Since retiring from the NSW public service, Darren has developed a commemorations and war memorials advisory practice, and serves on various Trusts and boards responsible for commemoration and preservation of Australia's memorial history.


Swimming - it’s more than just exercise

Join the Kogarah Bay Progress Association (KBPA) for a presentation by Mark Smith, the current Swimming Metro South East (MetSEA) President. MetSea encompasses Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, Inner West, St. George and Sutherland districts.

Mark is also a NSW Level 1 Swimming Referee and has worked at state level competitions with Olympians.

Mark is a Life Member of the Sans Souci Sea Devils Swim Club and volunteers his time at its club race nights helping swimmers improve their racing skills and achieve their goals.

Mark’s presentation will focus on the Sport of Swimming and the importance of having the right facilities and people to allow our young swimmers to become future champions.

Beverley’s presentation will take us on a journey around the significant heritage sites of Kogarah and nearby places of interest
